Manitoba plumbing offices get a long, demanding winter and a short window to prepare for it. The heating season is among the longest in southern Canada and the cold is severe, so frozen and burst lines, no-water calls and heat-related plumbing problems arrive for months rather than weeks. That makes the office team's phone skills a bigger lever here than in milder provinces, and it makes the timing of training matter.
Plumbers.Consulting is not a contractor. We run workshops and coaching for the people who answer and book your calls, and we help you measure whether the booking rate moves.
Winnipeg and the rest of the province
Most Manitoba plumbing calls start in Winnipeg, where callers can choose between many companies and usually phone two or three before booking. Speed of answer and a confident first minute decide those calls.
Outside the city, offices in places like Steinbach, Winkler, Brandon and Portage la Prairie serve their own towns plus surrounding farms, and further north, Thompson covers long distances. There, the caller often already knows your name. The risk is not losing to a competitor in 30 seconds; it is losing goodwill when timing promises slip. The workshop changes emphasis accordingly:
| Office type | Main training focus |
|---|---|
| Winnipeg, multi-CSR | Speed of answer, first-minute script, price questions |
| Regional town, one or two office staff | Simple call flow, honest windows, text confirmations |
| Northern or remote coverage | Travel planning, parts questions before booking |
A Manitoba training calendar
Because the busy season is long, we suggest a calendar built around it:
- August to September: the call handling workshop and a refresh of scripts for freeze calls.
- October: set up booking rate tracking so you have a baseline before volume climbs.
- November to March: short weekly call-scoring sessions of 20 to 30 minutes, using the scoring rubric, plus a plan for evening and weekend calls from the after-hours workshop.
- April: review the season's numbers and decide what to change before next fall.
New hires brought on mid-winter go through the CSR onboarding plan rather than learning by trial in a full queue.
Program questions on the phone
Manitoba homeowners hear about rebates and call to ask. As of October 2026, Efficiency Manitoba lists an air source heat pump rebate, and Manitoba was the first province to deliver the federal Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, announced in September 2025, which offers no-cost retrofits to eligible lower- and median-income households.
Most of these programs relate more to heating than plumbing, but callers rarely know the difference. A good CSR answer:
- says the program decides who qualifies;
- points to the program page;
- offers to book a visit if the caller also has a plumbing need.
Regulators to know
- The Office of the Fire Commissioner issues gas and oil burner permits and tradesperson licences, among other duties.
- Apprenticeship Manitoba handles trade certification.
- WCB Manitoba covers workers' compensation.
We link these so your office knows who to point callers toward. We do not give compliance advice.
Recording calls for coaching
Manitoba businesses generally fall under the federal PIPEDA for commercial activity. If you record calls, the privacy commissioner's guidance on recording customer calls explains notice, purpose and choice, and our recording guide summarises it. Talk to a lawyer about your own setup.
A worked example for a Winnipeg office
Numbers make the case better than adjectives. Suppose a Winnipeg office gets 400 calls in January, and 300 of them are bookable once you remove wrong numbers, existing customers checking times and sales pitches. At a 62% booking rate, the team books 186 jobs. Lifting that to 72% books 216, or 30 more jobs in the month from calls you were already paying to generate.
We do not promise that lift. We help you count it properly, using the method in the booking rate guide, so you can see what the workshop changed and decide whether to keep going.
Getting started from Manitoba
Manitoba is two hours ahead of Vancouver, so we book sessions mid-morning Pacific, which lands after your morning rush. Call, text or email with your call volume and team size, or read pricing first.
Frequently asked questions
When is the right time of year to train a Manitoba office?
Late summer and early fall, before the first hard freeze. Training in a quiet stretch lets CSRs practise without a full queue, and the new habits are in place when volume climbs.
Callers ask us about Efficiency Manitoba rebates. Can our CSR explain them?
Only in general terms. As of October 2026, Efficiency Manitoba lists an air source heat pump rebate and other programs, and it decides eligibility. CSRs should send callers to the program pages and avoid quoting amounts.
We are a small Brandon shop with one office person. Is a workshop worth it?
Often more so. When one person answers every call, each missed or unstructured call costs a bigger share of the week. A short call flow and a simple weekly score can make a noticeable difference.
Do you advise on gas permits or licences?
No. We link the Office of the Fire Commissioner for reference, but permit and licensing questions belong with your licensed staff and the regulator.
